The deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz (PSOE), publicly stated the "notable increase" in the demand for protected housing in Lanzarote and has underlined the need to expedite the projects still pending on the island, both public and private, as it is —as he pointed out— a situation of maximum social urgency.
The parliamentarian based these statements on the data provided by the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, which, he reported, confirm that 2025 "closed" with 3,050 people registered as applicants for protected housing on the island.
By municipalities, Arrecife concentrates the highest number of applications, with 2,084 applicants, followed by Yaiza with 447. At the opposite extreme, Tinajo and Haría register the lowest figures, with 23 and 27 petitioners respectively, which reflects the growing pressure on access to housing in the different centers of the island.
Bergaz pointed out that “the increase in claimants is not surprising, taking into account the increase in the average housing price in Lanzarote, which stands at around 2,970 euros per square meter in the first quarter of 2026. Likewise, rent has experienced an 8.8% rise in the last year in the province of Las Palmas”.
Given this situation, the deputy considered it urgent to accelerate pending projects such as the tender for 136 public housing units in Playa Blanca, regarding which —as he indicated— the Government of the Canary Islands has not yet offered clear guarantees of commencement within the current term.
Delays in the other 200 homes of Maneje
Likewise, he lamented the delays registered in this term in the execution of another 200 homes in the Maneje neighborhood, which, despite the housing emergency, "still do not have a drafted project." These homes would be added to the first development of 201 already under construction in the same neighborhood of Arrecife, promoted in the previous legislature under the presidency of Ángel Víctor Torres (PSOE).
The deputy also referred to the 46 homes planned on Triana street in Arrecife, on a 1,600 square meter plot ceded by the Cabildo de Lanzarote in the previous term, and which are still pending execution.
“It is imperative to expedite these and other projects. Likewise, it is essential that the two housing developments acquired by the Cabildo de Lanzarote in Playa Blanca and transferred to the regional Executive be handed over to families as soon as possible, thus facilitating access to decent and adequate housing, as established by our constitutional text,” he affirmed.
“We are facing one of the main concerns of the citizenry, as opinion studies reflect, which demands a firm, coordinated, and urgent response. Therefore, we will continue promoting initiatives in the Parliament of the Canary Islands so that the Canarian Government accelerates the execution of housing destined for the residents of Lanzarote and La Graciosa,” he/she/it concluded.
