The demand for protected housing continues to grow in Lanzarote. A total of 3,531 people are registered as of August 27, 2026, in the Public Registry of Applicants for Protected Housing on the island, according to the latest data provided this Tuesday to the deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz (PSOE), by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The figure represents 481 more applicants than at the end of 2025, when the registry counted 3,050 people, an increase of 15.8% in just eight months.
Given this trend, the deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz (PSOE), calls on the Government of the Canary Islands to accelerate the pending protected housing projects on the island, as the term approaches its end without a single protected dwelling having been delivered on the island yet.
“The data once again puts figures to a reality that more and more families are experiencing in Lanzarote. We have gone from 3,050 applicants at the end of 2025 to 3,531 in August of this year. That's 481 more people requesting access to protected housing in the face of purchase and rental prices that are unaffordable for many families,” Bergaz points out.
Arrecife concentrates the largest part of the demand for protected housing on the island, with 2,441 registered people, compared to 2,084 registered at the end of 2025. Along with Arrecife, Yaiza is among the municipalities with the highest number of applicants, with 486 registered people.
At the opposite end are Tinajo and Haría, with 29 and 36 applicants, respectively, the lowest figures on the island.
For Bergaz, the evolution of these figures “should serve to accelerate the response of the administrations and not to delay it.”
“We need the pending projects to move forward and for us to be able to proceed as soon as possible with the allocation of housing to the people who need it,” says the deputy, who calls on the regional executive for progress in the various actions planned in Lanzarote.
Among them are the 136 public housing units planned in Playa Blanca, whose tender remains pending. “With the situation we are experiencing regarding housing, we cannot allow projects like this to continue waiting,” adds Bergaz.
Maneje Housing
It has also refocused attention on the first promotion of 201 homes in the Maneje neighborhood, initiated during the previous legislature under the presidency of Ángel Víctor Torres (PSOE), which is now in its final stages and whose award, as announced by the Government of the Canary Islands itself, should begin this October. “We hope there will be no further delays,” Bergaz stated.
Similarly, the socialist deputy has once again called for the construction of the second promotion of 200 homes, also planned in Maneje, to be put out to tender as soon as possible, given that the drafting of the project was awarded months ago.
To these actions are added the 46 homes planned on Triana street in Arrecife, on a 1,600 square meter plot ceded by the Cabildo of Lanzarote during the presidency of Loli Corujo, which awaits the contracting of the works.
The socialist parliamentarian also calls for the two housing developments acquired by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in Playa Blanca and ceded to the regional Executive to be handed over to the intended families as soon as possible.
“Lanzarote needs protected housing projects, both public and private, to advance given the current housing situation. The data is there and we must provide a response commensurate with the seriousness of the situation,” Bergaz maintains.
“Housing is not a number or a project on paper. It is a family that can access a home, a young person who can become independent, or a person who can continue to live and work in Lanzarote. With 3,531 applicants and a growing demand, the administration must rise to the occasion and ensure that pending projects become available housing as soon as possible,” he affirms.
Bergaz announces that he will continue to bring this situation to the Parliament of the Canary Islands and to demand that the regional government advance the pending actions because, “given the seriousness of the situation, there is no time to lose.”
