The PSOE of Lanzarote will inaugurate this Friday April 10 its Feminist School, within the framework of a day under the title Women's Network, which will turn the island into a meeting point for feminist thought, political action, and commitment to equality.
The event will feature the presence of the former President of the Government of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, promoter of historical advances that marked a before and after in the conquest of rights and in the advancement of equality in Spain. The day will be held in the Sociedad Democracia de Arrecife starting at 7:00 p.m. and will combine reflection, debate and recognition of women who have contributed to transforming society from different fields.
The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has pointed out that this initiative “is born with the vocation of becoming a stable space for reflection, training and encounter around feminism, from a political but also social perspective”. In that sense, she has explained that “with the Feminist School we take another step in our commitment to real equality. It is not just about talking about rights, but about continuing to build them from public action and from collective work”.
The program includes a round table under the title Advancing in equality from public action and social action, in which prominent representatives of institutional and legal feminism will participate such as María Guijarro, Secretary of State for Equality; Lidia Guinart, deputy and president of the Monitoring Commission of the State Pact against Gender Violence; Gloria Poyatos, magistrate and president of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands; Andrea Fernández, deputy of the Socialist Group in Congress; and Milena Herrera, deputy of the Socialist Group in Congress. The table will be moderated by María Dolores Corujo, general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress.
For her part, the equality secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, Paula Corujo, has also highlighted the relevance of Zapatero's presence at this event, considering that “having José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is also recognizing a key stage in the expansion of rights in our country, especially for women. His participation brings political depth and memory to an event that looks to the future.”
As a close to the day, the awards ceremony for Women Who Transform will take place, a recognition of trajectories that represent the memory, the present, and the future of feminism. In this framework, the Root Award will be presented to Doña Nieves Rosa Hernández Gorrín, for a trajectory of feminist struggle, memory, and commitment to women; the Magma Award to Doña Vanessa Frahija, for promoting from the present a transformative, brave, and necessary feminism; and the Horizon Award to Doña Gloria Poyatos, for paving the way for the feminism of the future, expanding rights and equality.
The Secretary for Equality of the PSOE of Lanzarote has stated that “this Women's Network is not just an event. We want to create spaces to share, debate and continue pushing together, because equality does not advance on its own.” Furthermore, she highlighted that the Feminist School "is born with the will to consolidate itself as a useful tool to continue strengthening critical thinking, training, and feminist commitment inside and outside the organization."
