“His work and commitment to sustainability will mark a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations on our island and beyond,” they say from the party

Event on plastic pollution, MICRO 2024, in Lanzarote.

The PSOE of Lanzarote expresses its deepest condolences for the recent death of Juan Baztán, a recognized member of the scientific organizing committee of the MICRO Conference, an event of great relevance for the scientific and environmental field of the island.

Juan Baztán has been a key figure in the promotion of knowledge and research on microplastics and their impact on marine ecosystems. His Marine Sciences For Society initiative, in conjunction with the Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve, was key in initiating the island's commitment to the fight against plastic pollution. Likewise, his dedication and effort in organizing the MICRO Conference in Lanzarote, a space that has brought together scientists and experts from around the world, has been fundamental in positioning the island as a benchmark in the fight against plastic pollution and the preservation of the oceans.

On behalf of the entire socialist family of Lanzarote, the general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, highlights the great work of Baztán in favor of science and the environment: “His work and commitment to sustainability will mark a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations on our island and beyond.”

The PSOE of Lanzarote wishes to send a message of support and strength to the family, friends and colleagues of Juan Baztán in these difficult times. His departure leaves a great void in the scientific community and in all those who, like him, fight for a world more aware of the importance of caring for our environment.
