The PSOE of Lanzarote has strongly condemned the attack suffered at the archaeological site of Zonzamas, where one of the rock carvings has been damaged by graffiti. For the socialists, this fact not only constitutes an aggression against the island's cultural heritage, but also highlights the "false nationalism" of Oswaldo Betancort and Coalición Canaria, which abandons what truly represents the identity of Lanzarote.
The island secretary of the PSOE and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, stated that "what happened in Zonzamas is the direct consequence of neglect and lack of protection of heritage under the management of Oswaldo Betancort. That is the nationalism they practice: a lot of slogans and propaganda, but zero real commitment to what defines us as a people."
Corujo recalled that during the socialist mandate in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, procedures were initiated to contract a 24-hour surveillance service in Zonzamas, with the aim of guaranteeing the custody of the most important archaeological enclave on the island. "That file has been prepared for more than a year, but the current government group of Coalición Canaria and Partido Popular has left it in a drawer. Today we have proof of what that irresponsibility means," he stressed.
They do not protect or respect what is ours
"Those who wave the flag and fill their mouths talking about identity are the same ones who have abandoned Lanzarote's most valuable legacy. The attack in Zonzamas portrays that hypocrisy with crudeness: a false nationalism that does not protect or respect what is ours," added the socialist leader.
The PSOE of Lanzarote will demand that the Cabildo immediately reactivate the surveillance file and adopt the necessary measures to protect Zonzamas and the rest of the island's sites, "because defending Lanzarote begins by protecting its heritage."
