Benjamín Perdomo: “It is unacceptable that more than 400 athletes pay the consequences of an improvised and negligent management”
The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced the lack of foresight and planning of the island's government group in the face of the suspension of the eleventh edition of the Ultrabike Santa Rosa Lanzarote, scheduled for this weekend and which was to bring together more than 400 athletes, many of them from other islands and from the peninsula.
The event has been canceled following a report from the Government of the Canary Islands that warns of the possible impact of the route on a bird nesting area. According to the organization, the route was the same as in previous editions and, despite attempts to find an alternative, there was no material margin to obtain the necessary pronouncements from administrations such as the City Council of Teguise or the General Directorate of Traffic.
“The problem is not the report, which is normal when talking about environmental protection. The real problem is that the government group of the Cabildo did not do its job in time, nor did it foresee the environmental conditions or coordinate with the municipalities involved,” said Benjamín Perdomo, councilor of the Socialist Group.
For Perdomo, what happened “is yet another example of the chaos and disorganization in which the Cabildo is immersed under the mandate of Oswaldo Betancort”, and deeply regretted the damage caused to athletes, the organization and the economic sectors involved.
“The damage to the image of Lanzarote as a sports destination is enormous. We are talking about people who have paid for their tickets, booked accommodation and have been preparing for months to compete. And all because the Cabildo was not able to manage an event that has been held for years?”, stressed the socialist councilor.
The PSOE demands immediate explanations from the president of the Cabildo and the responsible area, as well as that responsibilities be clarified. “Lanzarote cannot afford to lose tests of this level due to the incompetence of those who govern,” Perdomo concluded.
