The PSOE of Lanzarote has denounced a new international trip by Oswaldo Betancort's Government, this time to Mauritania, after the Cabildo has planned the trip of the Minister of Fisheries, Samuel Martín, along with an insular delegation, to the city of Nouadhibou from November 22 to 30, 2026, for the signing of a general protocol of action for the twinning between the Nouadhibou City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
The socialist spokesperson in the Cabildo, Ariagona González, points out that this new trip is added to a long list of international trips made by Oswaldo Betancort and different members of his Government during this term. "New York, Iceland, Brazil, Gambia and now Mauritania. Since Oswaldo Betancort became President of the Cabildo, he and his ministers seem to have become official tourists with the money of the people of Lanzarote," she states.
"It is not about denying that there may be necessary institutional trips, but about demanding coherence. Each trip must be fully justified, proportionate to the objective pursued, and respond to a specific need of Lanzarote, not become a usual dynamic of the insular Government," González points out.
The socialist spokesperson recalls that the list of trips during this term is already extensive. Oswaldo Betancort traveled to New York with a delegation from the Cabildo and the Society for External Promotion to hold meetings related to the tourist promotion of Lanzarote.
The Socialist Group recalls that it already denounced Betancort's trip to Iceland with councilors Samuel Martín and Ángel Vázquez for the revalidation of Lanzarote-Chinijo Archipelago as a UNESCO World Geopark. At that time, the socialists questioned whether it was necessary to send three members of the insular Government to collect said accreditation and focused on the cost of tickets, accommodation, and daily allowances.
To these trips was added the trip of the Minister of Transport and Mobility, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, along with the service coordinator, to Curitiba, Brazil, from October 5 to 10, 2025, to learn about the city's transport system, including the contracting of plane tickets, accommodation, and travel insurance.
More recently, the Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña traveled with the Security and Emergencies Consortium to Gambia as part of a cooperation project that included emergency training and the donation of a fire truck and a bus.
“The Betancort Government has spent three years traveling halfway around the world at the expense of the Cabildo's budget,” states Ariagona González.
“What is striking is the ease with which this Government organizes trips and the difficulty it subsequently shows in advancing essential matters for Lanzarote. We demand the same diligence in managing the island as in preparing trips abroad,” says González.
“Public money is not for financing an institutional world tour for the Oswaldo Betancort Government,” concludes Ariagona González.
