The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Teguise will bring an initiative to the next municipal plenary session to seek a solution that allows unblocking the reform and expansion of the Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes Special Education Center, in Tahíche.
The socialists have been monitoring this essential action and were the ones who publicly announced, last August, the withdrawal of the Canary Islands Government from the procedure to draft the project, whose tender had a budget of 219,898.43 euros.
The withdrawal resolution includes a municipal report from June 25 that states the building is "out of compliance with zoning regulations." According to this document, this condition would prevent extensions, allowing only conservation and maintenance works. However, the resolution itself clarifies that the documentation sent by the Canary Islands Government regarding extensions made after 1999 was not taken into account.
“We not only demand that the project be resumed, but we propose alternatives to make the reform and expansion of the only center of its kind in Lanzarote possible,” says the socialist spokesperson, Marcos Bergaz.
Therefore, the PSOE proposes to definitively clarify the urban planning situation of the property through a new technical-legal report that allows determining which instrument can cover the reform and expansion of the center. Among the avenues to study, the socialists propose a specific modification of the planning, a provisional ordinance, or, if viable, the processing of the action as a project of insular interest.
“The PSOE puts its votes at your disposal to find a solution and unblock this project. We are willing to collaborate so that the way forward is found to move forward with an action that families have been waiting for and Lanzarote needs,” states Bergaz.
The withdrawal resolution itself also indicates that this decision does not prevent initiating a new tender procedure once the circumstances that have prevented continuing with the current one are resolved.
“Administrative difficulties cannot translate into more months or years of waiting. All options must be studied and a solution found that allows moving forward with an action that Lanzarote needs. Families are waiting for answers and the administrations involved must be able to find them and move forward,” argues Bergaz.
The socialist spokesperson recalls that the Tahíche center is the only special education center of these characteristics in Lanzarote and serves students and families from all over the island.
To conclude, the municipal and parliamentary leader announces that the PSOE "will closely follow this matter and propose proposals on the table so that this project is no longer blocked and can become a reality as soon as possible".
