The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, oppose the submarine emissary of the La Santa desalination plant, so they have committed to modifying the project of the future La Santa desalination plant “to avoid affecting the marine environment.”
“We echo and share the concern of the mayor of Tinajo, the surfers and fishermen of La Santa about the effects that brine discharges could cause through a submarine emissary on the marine biodiversity of the area or on the famous El Quemao wave”, both leaders assure. Corujo and Torres emphasize: “Fortunately, we are in time to correct the project and that is what we are going to do immediately.” The commitment was acquired after both addressed this problem taking advantage of the official visit of the president of the Canary Islands to the island this Friday, January 13.
Awaiting technical alternatives and consensus
To this end, María Dolores Corujo and Ángel Víctor Torres have agreed to address "urgently the Government of Spain" to modify the desalination plant project that the agricultural sector of Tinajo has been demanding for decades, in order to bring quality water for irrigation in the municipality.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the president of the Canary Islands did not want to comment on what the alternative to the submarine emissary may be “pending the technical options that are proposed to us, but, in any case, the solution we reach will be agreed upon with the City Council of Tinajo, the surfers, fishermen and other affected sectors”
Corujo and Torres trust “one hundred percent in the receptivity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to modify what refers to the discharge of water through a submarine emissary without delays in the execution”. The project is already drafted and will be executed once the Cabildo of Lanzarote (directly or through the Insular Water Council) signs the mandatory Agreement with the State Mercantile Society of Agrarian Infrastructures (SEIASA), dependent on said Ministry.
