The Popular Party of Lanzarote has presented a proposal for the redefinition of the Cross monument in Plaza de Las Palmas in Arrecife, with the aim of recovering this historical symbol and providing it with a new interpretative framework that highlights its cultural, social and heritage relevance.
This was explained by the vice-president in the plenary session this Thursday, adding this proposal to the motion presented last July. The initiative did not prosper, as it had the votes in favor of the Popular Party, VOX and the councilor Armando Santana; the abstention of the Canarian Coalition and Nueva Canarias; and the vote against the PSOE.
The initiative contemplates that the necessary procedures be initiated for the cross to be declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), which would guarantee its protection and conservation as part of the historical legacy of the island's capital. In addition, this possibility is contemplated in the legal report of the Cabildo de Lanzarote itself, making it clear that there is currently no request to redefine said monument.
The vice-president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and councilor of the Popular Party, María Jesús Tovar, pointed out that this initiative "is a way of preserving our collective memory, ensuring that the cross is understood not only from its religious character, but as a cultural symbol deeply rooted in the lives of generations of Arrecife residents."
Tovar added that "what we are looking for with this proposal is to give legal and patrimonial security to an element that is part of the living history of the city and that deserves to be protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Lanzarote cannot afford to lose pieces that identify us as a people and that contribute to our common heritage."
The Popular Party believes that "the patrimonial protection of the cross not only responds to a commitment to the memory and identity of the Arrecife residents, but will also contribute to enriching the historical-artistic ensemble of the island, offering future generations the possibility of knowing and valuing this monument from a cultural perspective."
In this way, the populars "reaffirm their defense of the traditions, history and symbols that are part of the collective heritage of Lanzarote, while promoting a serene and constructive debate around the management of the island's heritage."
"We deeply regret that Coalición Canaria, Nueva Canarias and PSOE do not heed the demands of the residents of Arrecife, who are clamoring for the maintenance of this monument, which is undoubtedly part of the religious history of the capital," concluded Tovar.
