The PP presents an initiative in Congress so that small farms can slaughter and sell poultry and rabbits

The Lanzarote deputy Francisco Cabrera assures that the approval of this measure will represent "a new opportunity for the agricultural-livestock activity of the island", since it will increase "the viability, competitiveness and subsistence of the farms"?

The Parliamentary Group of the Popular Party has presented an initiative for debate in the Health Commission of Congress aimed at authorizing small rabbit and poultry farms to carry out the slaughter and marketing of these animals directly in their own facilities.

The Lanzarote deputy, Francisco Cabrera, is confident that this initiative will be unanimously supported by the Chamber, "especially when it has been highly demanded by the affected sectors." "It directly results in an improvement in the viability and competitiveness of the farms, guaranteeing their subsistence in many cases," Cabrera defended.

In practice, this Non-Law Proposal will mean that poultry and lagomorph producers, mainly rabbits and hares, will no longer have to resort to slaughterhouses but will be able to close the cycle directly in their facilities. For this, yes, they must respect the community provisions on hygiene, production and marketing, and also the European regulation on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter.

Although this practice is allowed and carried out in other European countries such as the United Kingdom and France, in Spain it could not be carried out due to the existence of a Royal Decree that is "much more restrictive for this type of farms", according to Cabrera.

"The objective of the Popular Party and the Government is to adapt Spanish legislation to the new reality and the demand of producers in our country," he defended.
