The People's Party of Yaiza has denounced "an increase in insecurity" in the municipality and has assured that it is greater in the tourist town of Playa Blanca. The opposition party has asked the southern mayor Óscar Noda to "stop denying reality and finally assume his responsibility as the highest municipal official and directly responsible for the Local Police".
From the PP they have recalled that “the problems of insecurity are not an invention of the opposition”, but rather it is "a reality that neighbors, businessmen and professionals of the tourism sector are denouncing". Despite not having provided figures, the party has assured that the tourist guides of Lanzarote have warned of the increase in thefts committed by pickpockets, placing part of the incidents in different points of the municipality, such as the bus stops in El Golfo.
The municipal spokesperson for the PP in Yaiza, Juan Monzón, has pointed out that “it is unacceptable that the mayor tries to divert attention by exclusively demanding a reinforcement of the Civil Guard, when he knows perfectly well that the City Council has not reinforced what is its direct responsibility: the Local Police”.
“The municipality has grown in population and number of visitors, but the police force has not done so at the same pace, so continuing to postpone the coverage of the ten vacancies is irresponsible,” Monzón has warned.
Monzón has recalled that in the municipal staff of 2025 there are 42 positions for Local Police C1, of which 10 are currently vacant. "In the unified call they have only offered two positions, when they could have offered all the budgeted vacancies. Legal instruments exist; what is missing is political will," he has underlined.
The popular spokesperson has also denounced that the Local Police office frequently remains closed or without enough personnel to take reports, and that many nights the service is maintained with only one couple for the entire municipality. “With only one couple on the street, it is impossible to guarantee the police presence that citizens demand. The reality is that they are working with minimal staff, conditioned by sick leave, permits, and vacations, and doing what they can with the available resources,” states Monzón.
The replacement rate is no excuse
The PP has also questioned the argument of the replacement rate put forward by the mayor. The Order of September 30, 2025 (BOC no. 201) and the unified call for 2025 for Local Police positions establish that the town councils adhering to the Cooperation Agreement with the Autonomous Community and the FECAM can announce all budgeted vacancies in their staff when they join the annual unified call.
“Yaiza has been adhering to that agreement since 2022, and it was the mayor himself who presented it as a tool to fill more positions. The City Council decides when to release its public employment offer and only delegates the selection process. Therefore, there are no technical or legal excuses,” the popular spokesperson has stressed.
Finally, Juan Monzón has insisted that “security cannot be managed based on headlines and photos asking for more state personnel, while internally a depleted staff is maintained, with insufficient resources and a leadership without continuous attention to the citizen”.
