The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, presented this Thursday a donation from the Regional Chamber to the Spanish Red Cross, on the occasion of the popular collection for the traditional 'Flag Day'.

Pérez approached one of the tables installed by this entity in Weyler Square, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where this NGO had the support and backing of the General Captaincy of the Canary Islands, which collaborated in logistics and moved the Music Unit of the General Headquarters to liven up the day. General Julio Salom Herrera, from the Canary Islands Command of the Army, was also present. Pérez carried the Parliament's contribution in hand and asked citizens to "collaborate in financing the important projects that the Red Cross develops in the islands."

For the president, "The Red Cross plays a fundamental role in our society and, for more than a hundred years, has organized this day that serves to raise funds that allow the financing of numerous projects. In this 2023, in the Canary Islands, the donations collected during 'Flag Day' will be allocated to environmental projects to combat climate change, protect biodiversity, promote the sustainable use of natural resources, promote environmental education and fight against energy poverty."

"The Parliament of the Canary Islands wanted to join with a donation and we hope that the solidarity of the inhabitants of the Archipelago will be noticed throughout the day so that the Red Cross achieves a great collection that makes possible the continuity of its projects and the launch of new initiatives of general interest," said Astrid Pérez.

'Flag Day' is an annual tradition of the NGO, a fundraising event that mobilizes thousands of volunteers and has the support of a large part of the citizenry. In addition to donating in person at the more than 60 collection tables distributed throughout the Canary Islands, you can also contribute through online donations or through Bizum sent to 03165.

The provincial president of the Red Cross in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Heliodoro González, highlighted that "the day has passed in a very positive way, since the citizens of the Canary Islands always respond to the call of the Red Cross. We are very optimistic and we are very grateful for the support of our people, our volunteers and the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, who has shown us her willingness to continue collaborating in the future."
