The lawyer Juan David García Pazos not only convinced the Agonane environmental association to appear in the Stratvs case. In addition, he is now trying to appear in the Unión case, through another alleged association called Association of Jurists for the Defense of Legality and Justice Jiménez de Asúa. According to the lawyer himself, the association is made up of lawyers from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. However, it is not registered in the Canary Islands Registry of Associations, nor are there any references to it on the Internet.
These lawyers from Gran Canaria have tried to appear in different parts of Unión, using at least two different lawyers. One, García Pazos himself. Another, Roberto Orive Montesdeoca. However, the judge has not accepted their appearance for the time being. In some cases, because the order to open oral proceedings has already been issued in the proceedings or they have been dismissed. In others, because the documentation provided by the association is insufficient and the judge has required them to prove "the legitimate interest, action or claim" that they intend to exercise, as well as "a public deed of incorporation" of the association.
This new attempt to appear in cases whose investigation has ended is in addition to what is happening in the Stratvs case. First it was the environmental group Agonane, which has now withdrawn from the procedure claiming that it feels "used and deceived" by García Pazos, who convinced them to appear and they believe that what he did was hinder the procedure. Afterwards, coinciding with Agonane's withdrawal from the case, another alleged environmental group (Jacón) has requested to appear in Stratvs. In the case of this association, it is not registered in the Canary Islands Registry of Associations or in the national registry.
Connection between late appearances in Stratvs and Unión
The same is true of the association of jurists that is now trying to appear in different parts of the Unión case, and which is not registered as an association. And one of its lawyers, García Pazos, is related to the late appearances in the Stratvs case. It so happens that this same lawyer represented one of the main defendants in the Unión case, Luis Lleó, at least in a hearing in which one of his appeals within that case was resolved.
In addition, among other things, García Pazos is the lawyer who defends Francisco Chavanel in the lawsuit filed by prosecutor Ignacio Stampa against this journalist for violation of the right to honor. Stampa filed this lawsuit for the "insults" and "disqualifications" that Chavanel has been suffering, precisely for his participation as prosecutor in the Stratvs case and also in the Unión case.
For more than a year, this journalist from Gran Canaria focused on the corruption cases in Lanzarote, both in his radio program and in the articles he published in the newspaper Canarias 7, questioning judges, prosecutors and UCO agents, even engaging in personal attacks, and defending the defendants, the accused and those who have already been convicted. And when faced with that lawsuit, he appointed García Pazos to lead his defense.
"They are two different things"
"It is not the first time that I have tried to appear in the Unión case, but this has nothing to do with the other," the lawyer told La Voz, also referring to his participation in Agonane's appearance in the Stratvs case. "They are two different things," he insists.
Regarding the association of jurists he represents, which does not appear formally registered, García Pazos has not provided any data to this media outlet for the time being. When asked about the details regarding the constitution and motivation of this association, which is trying to appear in the Unión case when the investigation of almost all the proceedings has already been completed, the lawyer replied that he would speak first "with the president", who he says is Alberto Rubio, with whom this media outlet has not yet been able to contact. For the time being, all he has pointed out is that it is "an association of jurists that we have here in Las Palmas".
Juan David García Pazos has been linked to environmental causes for more than a decade, although at least in recent years he has also been involved in other types of lawsuits. In Lanzarote, he claims that he was "the first to denounce" the works of the Marina Rubicón marina, more than a decade ago, in a complaint that was dismissed. He also represented the families who lived in the old houses of Berrugo and who were evicted in 2010.
Lawyer in the Centros complaint
More recently, García Pazos was appointed by the island president of the PP, Ástrid Pérez, while she was a councilor of the Tourist Centers in pact with Pedro San Ginés, to file the institution's lawsuit against Carlos Espino. Regarding the Unión case, García Pazos himself has told La Voz that he already tried to appear when the investigation began, representing the businessman Miguel Míguez.
Shortly before Unión broke out, the Arrecife City Council demolished ten homes that this businessman was building without a license on Balayo Street. In addition to going to the Courts at that time, Míguez later tried to appear in the Unión case. Now, his former lawyer assures that the document they presented "disappeared". According to García Pazos, this is referred to in the "Barrancos report" (a document from one of the judges who briefly passed through the Unión case, Lucía Barrancos).
That report has been repeatedly used by several defendants and by media outlets owned by them, as well as by the journalist Francisco Chavanel, to try to discredit the investigation of the Unión case. It should be remembered that the case already has two convictions, one of them final, and most of the rest of the proceedings are practically ready to go to trial.
