The Lanzaroteño Fernando Figuereo has submitted his resignation as Director General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands to the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, as La Voz has been able to confirm.

Figuereo thus leaves his position, having been appointed Director General of Emergencies in May 2024.

The Lanzaroteño has made this decision for personal reasons. "There are many moments in life and I believed that the time had come to request my dismissal now that I have turned 65 and, above all, because I no longer have the enthusiasm I had when I started in the position," he told La Voz.

"I understood that new blood is needed to bring new ideas with greater capacity for work because it was already affecting my health to be on the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year," he continued.

Thus, the Extraordinary Official Gazette of the Canary Islands published this Thursday states that Laura María Lima García is the new Director General of Emergencies.

Regarding the balance of these two years as Director General of Emergencies, Figuereo has stated that it has been "exciting and very constructive". "I have learned a lot and, above all, I have learned that in emergencies there are no political parties, but rather that we must all work together," he indicated. Within the General Directorate, "there are very good professionals, all well-prepared, and there is perfect coordination at the regional level with the different emergency consortia."

Fernando Figuereo managed during his tenure to promote Lanzarote having a medicalized helicopter based on the island, although this measure is still in process for the moment. "The tender document is being prepared to put it out for tender, and there is already a commitment from the Government of the Canary Islands," he concluded.
