The Government of the Canary Islands will restore the painting of Santa Margarita de Guatiza

It is a work of art of Flemish influence and of great historical value

The Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands has granted a nominated subsidy to the Bishopric of the Province of Las Palmas with an amount of "45,000 euros" to finance the restoration project of the painting of Santa Margarita of the Parish of Santo Cristo de las Aguas in Guatiza, in Teguise.

For the Minister of Culture, Migdalia Machín, the commitment is "to recover, conserve and make known the heritage of the islands", she highlighted. An initiative that represents a further step in the line of work to be followed by the Government of the Canary Islands in terms of heritage, betting on the recovery, dissemination and historical heritage research of the islands, always hand in hand with the institutions or entities that guard these assets.

For Machín, "the Ministry's commitment to the heritage and memory of Lanzarote is firm and we will work both to recover and conserve those essential pieces for the history of the island, as well as to make its heritage value known."

Painting Santa Margarita

This work of art of Flemish influence and of great historical value, dates from the 17th century, being one of the most valuable pieces of the Canarian ecclesiastical heritage. It represents the saint in the center of the canvas and on the sides are represented different scenes of her life.

According to research, this canvas of anonymous authorship possibly occupied the main altar of the old temple of the same name.
