The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands will release next week for public information the draft of the Plan for the Management of Natural Resources (PORN) of the Chinijo Archipelago. Previously, the regional Executive presented the document this Friday to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, as the managing body of the natural spaces of the Island.

The regional councilor, José Antonio Valbuena, the island president, María Dolores Corujo, and the autonomous vice-counselors of Territorial Planning and the Fight against Climate Change, Leopoldo Díaz and Miguel Ángel Pérez, respectively, participated in the meeting. Political and technical representatives from both administrations and from the town councils of Teguise and Haría also took part.

The autonomous councilor responsible for the Area, José Antonio Valbuena, pointed out that “this draft arises after a citizen consultation carried out between November 4 and December 4, 2020, in which 21 contributions were counted on different topics related to the problems that the plan intends to solve; the need and opportunity for its approval; the possible regulatory and non-regulatory alternatives; as well as the objectives of the norm referring to the purpose, scope and structure of contents, initial scope foreseen, general objectives of the plan and zoning of the scope”.

For her part, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for its involvement and collaboration in “recovering the unjustifiable delay in the management of the natural spaces of Lanzarote after a decade of inactivity” and expressed her confidence that “the work carried out will serve so that the Chinijo Archipelago has, as soon as possible, a management instrument that provides legal certainty and facilitates the management of the natural space”.

Finally, the Vice-Minister of Territorial Planning, Leopoldo Díaz, stressed that the PORN of the Chinijo Archipelago is a previous document “essential” for the processing and approval of the future Governing Plan of Use and Management (PRUG) of this natural space and recalled that the absence of this document was key in its annulment by the Supreme Court.

The Government of the Canary Islands also highlighted "the high degree of compliance with the deadlines" that it claims is being achieved, "thanks to the joint work between the Ministry, the Cabildo and the City Council of Teguise, to expedite the resolution of files in this natural space, unblocking projects and investments at a time when the Administration must promote economic activity".
