The Castle of San José and its surroundings and the headquarters of the César Manrique Foundation have just been added to the list of spaces that the Cabildo of Lanzarote aspires to protect, with the declaration of Assets of Cultural Interest in the category of monument.

The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands publishes this Tuesday the opening of both files, which are added to those announced in recent days about other places such as the El Diablo restaurant in Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua and its auditorium, the Manrique house in Haría, the Church of San Marcial and three buildings on Calle Real.

Regarding the Castle of San José, the Cabildo report recalls that it is already protected by several instruments, such as a 1949 decree on Spanish castles and the Spanish Historical Heritage Law, which already recognizes castles as Assets of Cultural Interest. In addition, it is included as a protected building, together with its area of influence, in the Protection Catalog of Architectural and Monumental Heritage of the Island Territorial Planning Plan of Lanzarote, and also in the Catalog of Protected Buildings of the General Plan of Arrecife.

Regarding the headquarters of the César Manrique Foundation, which was also once the artist's home, the file that was published this Tuesday began on March 19, with a decree signed by the CEO of Heritage.

Known as “Taro de Tahíche”, the property is also already included in the Protection Catalog of Architectural and Monumental Heritage of the PIOT and in the Municipal Architectural Catalog of Teguise.

“From the point of view of Historical Heritage, it represents a set of notorious historical, architectural and artistic values that constitute a unique testimony of the culture of Lanzarote”, the technical report states, on which the initiation of this file to declare it a BIC is based.
