The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, presented this Monday the events that will take place during the month of March on the occasion of International Women's Day. The presentation was in the Mararía Room of the island's Library, where Dolores Corujo announced that a special tribute will be paid to the women canners.
In the same vein, the island's president highlighted the "extraordinary effort" of the areas of Equality and Social Rights "to once again make visible the firm commitment of this institution and this government to feminist demands." "A commitment that we carry in our DNA, since all the legislative changes that have meant feminist conquests bear the seal of the progressive forces; of the left that has modernized and advanced this country," added Corujo.
"We have a lot to do, but we are not going to allow anyone to force us to take a step back," continued the president, who invited the population to celebrate "with hope" the next March 8 and to participate in the activities programmed by the Cabildo. María Dolores Corujo also celebrated that tribute will be paid to the women canners of the island, "women who occupied their first job and who had the capacity to have social security and defend their families."
"They are women who have been invisible for a long time and deserve a fair tribute," said the Councilor for Equality, Myriam Barros, who has detailed the "attractive" program designed by the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
She also expressed her gratitude to all the technicians of the institution who have made it possible and sent an affectionate greeting to the Councilor for Social Rights, Isabel Martín, who for health reasons has not been able to be present at the presentation.
Feminist program for the month of March
The agenda of events programmed by the Cabildo of Lanzarote to commemorate International Women's Day will start this coming Friday, March 3 with two feminist presentations, which will be held from 6:30 p.m., at the CIC El Almacén.
The first of these will deal with "Surrogate wombs" and will be given by the writer and activist Nuria González, who has become a fundamental voice of the feminist movement in Spain and the construction of an abolitionist theory of surrogacy, denouncing the violation of fundamental rights such as the physical and moral integrity of mothers.
For her part, the delegate of Human Rights and coordinator of Incidence in the ASPACE Confederation, Ángeles Blanco, will speak about "Augmentative and alternative communication as a vehicle for inclusion for women with cerebral palsy and other disabilities with complex communication needs."
On Wednesday, March 8, the video "Tribute to the women canners of Lanzarote" will be launched on social networks, which will end with the presentation of a sculpture that will be installed in May. This video recognizes the work done by thousands of women when Arrecife was one of the largest national fishing ports and had five canning factories.
In the afternoon, the Cabildo will join the demonstration called by the Forum against Gender Violence of Lanzarote and the 8M Platform, which will depart at 7:00 p.m. from La Plazuela de Arrecife.
The program will continue on Friday, March 10, with the screening of the short film "Confecciones Saavedra. This production, which explores and documents the story of Juana Saavedra, businesswoman and founder of the first female murga in the Canary Islands, will be screened at 8:00 p.m. at the Víctor Fernández Gopar Theater "El Salinero".
For the days 17 and 18 of March, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has organized self-defense workshops aimed at women, which will be taught by the Judo Club Arados of Costa Teguise and its teachers Alejandro Miguel Ramírez and Haddu Hammed "Kun", and which will take place in the Sports City located in Arrecife.
Finally, on Friday the 24th, at 8:00 p.m. and in the Municipal Theater of Tías, the actress Petite Lorena will stage a monologue with which she will bring multiple laughs to the public.
