The Canary Islands Government warns the Cabildo that it is urgent to regulate access to Timanfaya

The Minister of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano H. Zapata.

The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Hernández Zapata, warned this Wednesday the Cabildo of Lanzarote that the ordering of access to the Timanfaya National Park is "unpostponable", after the island corporation presented a project last September that has not yet been implemented.

Hernández Zapata agreed in parliamentary commission with the deputy of Nueva Caraias-Bloque Canarista Yone Caraballo, who denounced the saturation of the space, the deterioration of the park, the bad image offered and the bad experience that the current access system means for tourists, which forces long waits.

The counselor stressed that it is the Cabildo of Lanzarote that must control access to the National Park and implement a reservation system as soon as possible, since vehicles and buses access the Islote de Hilario "without any order or foresight."

He has asked the Cabildo to implement an online reservation system with access and parking time, something that the Ministry has insisted on "repeatedly."

"The conservation of the National Park and the safety of its visitors worries us," the parking capacity is not being met, established at 90 vehicles and eight buses, and parking spaces have been extended to a National Park reserve area that is within the highest category of protection.

The consequences of the disorder are "undeniable" and affect the landscape impact, road safety and the bad tourist image, Hernández Zapata warned.

He urged the Cabildo to implement solutions, because "the change of model in the visit is unpostponable."

"We want the Islote de Hilario to stop being a mass parking lot and recover its function as a place of observation and enjoyment," he insisted.

"The Cabildo will always have us as an ally to collaborate in everything they need and we hope they will do it soon," said the counselor, for whom access to the National Park must be made with reservation and schedule in shuttle buses from parking lots in Yaiza and Tinajo.

These parking lots and information points can also promote the socioeconomic development of the municipalities.
