The plenary session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Thursday the motion presented by the Popular Party to demand that the Government of Spain incorporate young Canarians into the state program 'Summer Youth', an initiative that offers discounts on rail transport but excludes the islands as they do not have this means of transport.
This demand has been led, both last year and this year, by the New Generations of the Canary Islands, the youth organization of the Popular Party that, according to the formation, "has always been the first to demand equal rights between young people from the peninsula and the Canary Islands."
The agreement reached involves urging the central Executive to design alternative measures that allow young people from the Canary Islands to enjoy the same opportunities as those from the Peninsula, either through specific bonuses in air and sea transport or through mobility programs adapted to the island reality.
The deputy spokesperson for the Popular Group in the Cabildo, Kiko Aparicio, celebrated the majority support (all groups voted in favor except the PSOE) for this initiative and stressed that "it is a matter of justice." "Our young people cannot be discriminated against simply for living in a fragmented territory where there are no trains. We cannot allow them to be treated as second-class citizens," he asserted.
Aparicio added that the objective of the motion is "to guarantee equal opportunities for all young people in Spain, including those in the Canary Islands, who must be able to access mobility and leisure experiences in similar conditions to those of their peninsular counterparts."
"With this approval, the Popular Party ensures that the Cabildo of Lanzarote raises its voice and joins other island administrations in defense of the rights of Canarian youth, demanding sensitivity and commitment to the islands from the central Government," they conclude.
