The Cabildo of Lanzarote has been the beneficiary of a direct subsidy of 5,537,657.84 euros from the Government of the Canary Islands for the acquisition of 76 newly constructed homes in Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza. This was announced this Tuesday by the president of the island's Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, who states that "these homes, which are part of the third phase of protected housing in Montaña Roja, will be transferred to the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) for their allocation to affordable rental housing."

The first island Corporation will allocate the amount of this subsidy along with another 5.5 million euros, from its own funds, for the purchase of these homes. "Access to decent housing," Betancort emphasizes, "continues to be one of the main demands of the citizens of Lanzarote, and from the Cabildo we are acting with determination and responsibility to provide real answers to this situation, making a significant investment effort to do so."

The Minister of Housing, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, pointed out that this action "reinforces the Cabildo's commitment to expanding the public housing stock for affordable rental, especially in areas like Playa Blanca, where housing demand is high and rental prices are the highest on the island".

After acquiring these 76 new homes, the Cabildo of Lanzarote will transfer ownership to the Canary Housing Institute, an organization that will assume their allocation, conservation, and maintenance, thus guaranteeing their proper management and social use.

Historic investment

In this legislative term, the island institution, presided over by Oswaldo Betancort, has made a historic investment in housing, mobilizing more than 20 million euros aimed at increasing the supply of public housing and affordable rental housing on the island.

Within this plan, it is worth remembering that the Lanzarote Cabildo recently acquired and transferred a total of 42 homes in Playa Blanca to ICAVI, which will also be entirely allocated to affordable rentals, thus consolidating a line of work based on inter-administrative cooperation to address the housing crisis.

Likewise, the Cabildo has also acquired three plots of land, two in Arrecife and one in Uga, in the municipality of Yaiza, for the development of future public housing projects, in addition to becoming the first Cabildo in the Canary Islands to approve the Youth Rental Bonus, with an investment of 1.4 million euros, facilitating the emancipation of young people.
