The Cabildo of Lanzarote organized this Thursday some conferences dedicated to sustainability together with the NECSTouR network (Network of European Competitive and Sustainable Tourism Region). The event took place in Jameos del Agua and was attended by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the president of NECSTouR, Yolanda de Aguilar.

Dolores Corujo and De Aguilar established an agreement within the framework of Fitur 2023, as a result of which this conference took place, whose purpose lies in the "commitment to quality to the detriment of quantity, consolidating the Island as a smart and sustainable tourist destination".

The president began her speech by welcoming the 18 destinations from nine different countries that are part of the Association of European Regions for Sustainability and Competitiveness present on the island.

“Lanzarote joined this organization only a year ago with the desire to participate in tourism sustainability projects throughout Europe. The reason is that we have in common the objective of advancing in an increasingly sustainable management of our destinations. The destinations have in common the interest in having the best possible tourism industry”, Corujo pointed out.

In this line, the president defended the two reasons for having said common interest, and that is that “our reason for being is that the visitor leaves satisfied, so they must live their experience as something unique and unforgettable”.

“On the other hand, we owe ourselves to our community, so tourism must contribute economic and social well-being to the local population. This translates into diversified and sustainable economic activity and quality jobs. For both reasons, we all have in common the need to take maximum care of the destination and manage it with excellence”, said Dolores Corujo.

“In this changing world, there are already known indicators that make us competitive in different markets, such as climate or security, but the commitment of visitors from all countries to sustainability is a differentiating element and defending this model is our challenge”, the president highlighted.

“Furthermore, it is our responsibility that future generations can enjoy a visitable territory, a better land, and the contribution that visitors can make to the Island, to take care of it, to understand it, to protect its identity, putting the culture of limits as a slogan, is fundamental”, Corujo concluded.

For her part, the president of NECSTouR thanked the welcome in “this wonderful and unique island” and “we hope that these conferences will satisfy all the participants”.

“When we agreed with the president and the CEO Héctor Fernández to hold these conferences, we decided to put all our resources at your disposal to make it possible and, in this way, it has become a reality”, said De Aguilar.
