The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Arrecife are working together to promote the project of the waterfall of the Charco de San Ginés, a work conceived by César Manrique that will beautify this point of the capital.

The Vice President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and head of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, and the Mayor and direct head of Public Works of the capital, Yonathan de León, assure that, once the cooperation is granted, the "work will be put out to tender."

"It is great news not only for the people of Arrecife, but for the entire citizenry of Lanzarote, since this idea of César will become a reality and we will finally have a waterfall in the Charco de San Ginés," said the Vice President, Jacobo Medina.

The Mayor and direct head of Public Works of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, stressed that this intervention "means a before and after in the image of the Charco de San Ginés". "The work of César Manrique is still very present in our daily lives, and being able to enjoy it in the capital is a source of pride for all the residents."

This work includes not only the waterfall but also the installation of "two reception pumps for the borehole, possibly only one if a second pump is not needed." Likewise, this intervention will not damage the coastline of the capital and will respect the environment, thus complying with the approval of the Canary Islands Executive to the project, which also contemplates the execution of pipelines for electrical conduction and sanitation.

Already has a license for its restoration

The Arrecife City Council has approved two licenses and, with them, the authorization for the restoration of the waterfall of the Charco de San Ginés. This project, which has an investment of "500,000 euros" from the Cabildo of Lanzarote, thus takes a definitive step towards its materialization.

This has been confirmed by the councilor responsible for the Technical Office, Maciot Cabrera, who announced that, after the "relevant evaluation process, authorization has been granted to carry out the necessary works." As is known, the waterfall was conceived in its day by César Manrique, during the execution of the urbanization works of the bank of the Charco de San Ginés, but active for a short time, due to technical design errors and poor maintenance.

The inter-administrative cooperation procedure for the project to recover the waterfall and the luminous effects that Manrique designed, began in December 2021 by means of a letter from the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the work to be executed will consist of raising the water to the upper edge of the Morro de la Elvira, letting it fall in a free sheet between the rocks of the slope.

Maciot Cabrera, who has highlighted that the project has also received the "technical support of the Arrecife City Council", and emphasizes that "the favorable resolution by the relevant authorities reflects the commitment to the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of Arrecife."

The councilor has also stated that the restoration of the Cascada del Charco de San Ginés "responds to the interest in revitalizing this emblematic space for residents and visitors", and it is expected that "the works, once started, will contribute to enhancing the historical value of this area".

Likewise, Cabrera expresses his "satisfaction" for the progress of this project and highlights the "commitment of the Arrecife City Council to the improvement and conservation of the natural environment of the capital".
