The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Thursday the acquisition of four properties intended to reinforce the island's network of socio-health centers and services, an action financed through the investment program linked to the European Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The action, which represents an investment of close to five million euros, will allow for the creation of more than 200 places for the elderly and people with disabilities, increasing the island's care capacity and expanding the coverage of dependency care services.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted the relevance of this action for the future of socio-health care on the island. “We are facing one of the most important investments made in recent decades in socio-health matters. With these acquisitions, we are responding to real population needs and strengthening a public network of resources that will be key to facing the demographic and social challenges of the coming years,” states Betancort.

A before and after in the network of socio-health centers on the island

The acquisition of these four properties represents "one of the biggest advances made in recent decades in socio-health infrastructure in Lanzarote". Thanks to the collaboration between the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, through financing from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) funds, the island will significantly increase the number of places and resources for the care of the elderly and people with disabilities on the island.

In this regard, the vice-president and head of the Planning and Project Coordination Area, María Jesús Tovar, highlighted the work carried out to identify and select properties that would allow for the acceleration of the creation of new socio-health resources on the island.

“We have promoted rigorous planning that has allowed us to take advantage of a historic opportunity for European funding to increase the service network efficiently. Each of these actions responds to specific needs identified in Lanzarote and contributes to building infrastructure adapted to new models of care and support,” affirms Tovar.

The acquisitions are the result of a public bidding procedure through which the most suitable real estate proposals were selected to meet the detected needs in terms of dependency. "These new resources," as highlighted by the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, "will allow progress in the implementation of a person-centered care model, based on closer, personalized, and integrated care in the community environment."

Buildings in Arrecife for dependent and disabled people

Among the planned actions, the acquisition of an entire building in Arrecife stands out, for an amount of 1.9 million euros, comprising nine homes, which will be used to create at least 15 residential places.

Likewise, the Cabildo will also acquire another property located in the capital for an amount close to 1.2 million euros for the creation of at least 20 places for people with disabilities and physical disabilities. "This resource," explains Minister Marci Acuña, "represents an unprecedented advance in Lanzarote, as it will allow for the first time on the island to have specific places to care for people with physical disabilities, a historical demand that until now lacked specialized resources to attend to unforeseen situations and other circumstances that generate physical dependency."

New resources for older people

The Governing Council also approved the acquisition of a home located in La Vegueta, in the municipality of Tinajo, for an amount of 1.2 million euros. This is a property that will be used to create a day care center for dependent older people with a capacity for at least 20 places.

Added to this action is the purchase of premises located in Arrecife, for an amount of 675,000 euros, which will allow for the establishment of a new day care center for older people with a minimum capacity of 20 places.

More than 5 million euros for the Socio-health Center in Tahiche

Added to these actions is the construction of the new center for older people in Tahiche with capacity for 75 residential places and 50 day care places, for which the Cabildo has allocated more than 5.4 million euros, charged to the European Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, a work that is already being executed.

The project will be developed under the cohabitation unit model, currently considered one of the most advanced references in long-term care, by reproducing living environments closer to home and promoting personalized attention.

With this set of investments, Lanzarote takes a decisive step towards modernizing its care system, expanding the coverage of socio-health services, addressing historical demands from citizens, and guaranteeing a better quality of life for people in situations of dependency and their families.
