The Cabildo of Lanzarote has commemorated World Cancer Day with the reading of the manifesto promoted by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), by the island's president, Oswaldo Betancort, and the Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, and which was attended by the president of the AECC in Lanzarote, Lola Lasso.
During the reading, it was recalled that in 2024 cancer affected 290,441 people in Spain, of which 6,431 received their diagnosis in the province of Las Palmas. In addition, it was stressed that in 2030 the figure is expected to reach 317,000 new cases per year in the country, which means a diagnosis every 1.8 minutes.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, expressed his firm commitment to the fight against this disease: "Cancer does not warn or discriminate, it affects people with names and surnames, with life projects that are interrupted. As public representatives, we have the responsibility to guarantee more resources for prevention, research and care for patients. We must get involved as a society to improve health strategies and achieve 70% survival by 2030."
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, stressed the importance of having accurate and accessible information to make effective decisions: "Without data, we cannot move forward. The MásDatos Cancer initiative, promoted by the AECC and other entities, is key to improving equity in access to treatments, strengthening prevention and offering a better quality of life to patients. From the administrations we must support this type of initiatives that can make a difference."
The manifesto read in the Plenary insists on the need for More Data, More Research, More Prevention and More Attention to guarantee More Hope and More Life to those who live with this disease.
"The Cabildo of Lanzarote reaffirms its support for all initiatives that contribute to improving prevention, early diagnosis and care for cancer patients, joining the call of #TodosContraElCáncer," they conclude.
