The Cabildo gives the green light to the implementation of the TaxiLanzarote.net system

The initiative seeks to improve public service, protect employment and establish an island model of technological management against competition from private platforms

The plenary session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, meeting in ordinary session this Friday, has approved a motion presented by the Coalición Canaria (CC) Group to “promote the implementation and definitive regulation of the TaxiLanzarote.net system”. This digital platform represents a decisive step towards the modernization of the taxi sector on the island, the improvement of the public transport service and the protection of employment in a context of growing challenges.

The initiative, defended by the Minister of Transport and Mobility, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, was supported after a debate in which the urgent need to provide the taxi sector with technological tools that guarantee more coordinated and efficient management was highlighted.

“The taxi sector in Lanzarote has proven to be essential for both residents and tourists. TaxiLanzarote.net is not just an application: it is an instrument of transformation that dignifies the work of taxi professionals and will improve the service”, Jiménez pointed out.

The motion also urges the island's town councils to join “voluntarily and in a coordinated manner” the deployment of this common platform, and requests the Government of the Canary Islands for its active involvement “through specific financing, technical assistance and autonomous recognition of the island model of public taxi management”.

A transport model adapted to the 21st century

The TaxiLanzarote.net system includes key functionalities such as automated service assignment, electronic payment, interoperability between municipalities and a more equitable distribution of work among taxi drivers.

In addition, it seeks to reduce waiting times, improve coverage in less connected areas and offer a real alternative to unfair competition from unregulated private platforms.

The Cabildo of Lanzarote has shown its convictions during the current mandate regarding the need to improve the service for professionals and clients in the sector; a work that, among other measures, will culminate in a regulation that regulates the mandatory use of the platform, within the framework of the island powers provided for in Law 13/2007 on the Regulation of Road Transport in the Canary Islands.
