The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, promoted the approval in the Insular Government Council of a key contractual modification to urgently enable six new day care places at the Doctor Domingo de Guzmán Residence, located in Las Cabreras (Tahíche-Nazaret road). This initiative, coordinated by the Department of Social Welfare and Inclusion, seeks to quickly increase the demand for places in day centers, a care service that currently has high demand on the island.
These six new places will operate on business days from Monday to Friday and will have all the technical, financial, and quality of care guarantees, with a real investment of 33,660.30 euros for the remaining period of the contract extension that begins this September 1, 2026. Technical reports confirm the suitability of the Las Cabreras complex, confirming that the interior rooms and exterior gardens have sufficient free space to accommodate the new users without interfering with the center's residential routine.
The assignment of new staff will be added to the center's solid current workforce, composed of a multidisciplinary team of more than 36 professionals including nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, social work, and occupational therapy staff. With this human and technical reinforcement, the island's Cabildo consolidates a unified and quality care model, comfortably exceeding the minimum requirements mandated by Canary Islands regulations to protect the most vulnerable people.
“The objective is clear for the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. We must invest the Cabildo's economic resources in improving the quality of life of our families. Six families on the island of Lanzarote will benefit from this modification that links us with the company until 2028 here at the Las Cabreras Residence,” stated President Oswaldo Betancort during the visit to the facilities.
“I want to thank the Minister of Social Welfare for his good work, the Teguise City Council for its collaboration, and everyone who works and gives their best every day in this center to care for our elders. This is the most viable and humane short-term alternative to provide direct coverage for dependents with Degrees I, II, and III, allowing for the efficient use of available resources and guaranteeing our citizens' right to be attended to in their community environment.”
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, highlighted that the measure effectively responds to the island's social needs, so that aid is not dependent on waiting for new infrastructure. “This is a small residence that has been operating since 2014 for 24 places, and what we are expanding from September are six more places for day care, seeking synergies from an operational center to expand care resources, without detracting from the attention to the 24 permanent residents. To this end, the company will hire two new full-time care assistants for the day service,” explained the minister.
Meanwhile, Nereida González, councilor for Social Welfare and the Elderly Area of the Teguise City Council, emphasized that “this means 6 more places and also 6 more opportunities for families and the elderly, both for the social well-being of each elder and for the respite it provides to families,” while reiterating her gratitude to the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and to Minister Acuña for this contribution to the Las Cabreras Residence.
