The Lanzarote City Council has commissioned the public company Gesplan to prepare the Special Plan for the Protected Landscape of La Geria, a project that aims to protect one of the places with the most natural, landscape and heritage value on the Island. To this end, the highest island institution has given a deadline of 13 months and a budget of 355,298.31 euros. This was reported in a press release.

The President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, celebrated the launch of this project as "a great milestone and a very important first step in the protection of one of the most emblematic areas of Lanzarote." "This procedure has been stalled for years and we are very pleased to be able to unblock it and move forward with this initiative," added the president.

The Councilor for Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, explained that La Geria is characterized by mineral soils "scarcely altered" and, above all, by an extensive occupation by the wine-growing agricultural activity. "The planting of vines constitutes the most appreciated value of the landscape of La Geria, which has deserved recognition for the form of exploitation compatible with the conservation of the natural values of the area, and justifies its declaration as a Protected Landscape," Machín highlighted in relation to the landscape value and the natural interest of this area.

Implementation of renewable energies in Lanzarote

On the other hand, the Cabildo has also contracted the public company Tragsatec to prepare a Provisional Island Ordinance to establish criteria for homogenizing the use of renewable energies on the Island. The item allocated for this project will be 59,325.48 euros and will have a period of about two and a half months for its execution.

The Cabildo has revealed that "the main problem that is intended to be solved with this Ordinance is to replace the lack of regulation regarding the territorial implementation of the use of wind energy generation, photovoltaic or any other from endogenous renewable sources on the island of Lanzarote", setting the minimum criteria necessary for its legitimization and determination of the public and social interest of the specific projects that are intended to be installed, both public and private, and the development of a more sustainable energy model that favors the creation of a local economy of great added value must be made compatible.
