The Cabildo announces the construction of a "humanitarian center" to care for migrants in Lanzarote

Meeting of the Town Council and Teresa Mayans

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, met this Thursday with the sub-delegate of the Government in Las Palmas, Teresa Mayans, and announced that both institutions will collaborate in the construction of a "humanitarian center" for migrants arriving on the Island. According to the Island Corporation, this measure seeks to provide "immediate attention after disembarkation", among other things for the "fulfillment of mandatory quarantines due to the health situation."

Corujo explained that this center will provide "stay and decent conditions for migrants until they can be referred to other state or Autonomous Community resources."

The president also assured that the Island Corporation will cede the land where this building will be located, which will become “a reception space where they can sleep, wash, or eat”. In addition, she highlighted the "need for humanity from society and administrations to manage a situation as serious as the one experienced by people arriving to the islands in boats."

On the other hand, the sub-delegate of the Government in Las Palmas, Teresa Mayans, highlighted the collaboration of the Cabildo and lamented that “it is not extended to other public institutions.”

Regarding the Temporary Foreigner Reception Center (CATE) that Arrecife had blocked, Mayans pointed out that its opening is "imminent," after the agreement approved in the Council of Ministers to declare it of public interest, and assured that "it will mean a turning point so that immigrants never have to stay in the onion port in undignified conditions.”

In addition, she announced that “Órzola and Caleta de Cebo will have infrastructures to have materials for the first care of immigrants upon arrival at the port."
