The Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands commit to recovering the palm grove of Lanzarote

Visit of the Minister of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Zapata, and the Vice President, Jacobo Medina.

The vice president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina, met this Tuesday with the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Hernández Zapata. In this first meeting on the island, they agreed on the joint commitment to recover the island's palm grove.

“Lanzarote must move towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model, and one of the most urgent aspects is the recovery of the island's palm grove, seriously affected by the diocalandra,” said the vice president, who thanked the minister “for his kindness and willingness to work jointly with the Corporation." 

“We have discussed various issues of utmost priority for Lanzarote, such as the agreement to try to recover the palm groves affected by the diocalandra, with more than one million euros contributed by the Ministry,” said the Minister of Ecological Transition, Mariano Zapata.

The burial of electrical wiring

Likewise, some of the necessary aspects for the island of Lanzarote were put on the table, such as the need to execute the burial of the electrical wiring throughout the island territory, or the recovery of the San Bartolomé Wind Farm. 

“There is a strong commitment from the Government of the Canary Islands to finance part of the burial of the wiring, as long as the Yaiza City Council makes the land available,” said the vice president. 

“We also discussed the recovery of the volcanic cones, which have an investment, through the Next Generation Funds, of almost one million euros,” stressed the regional minister, who also highlighted the interest and opening of strategic lines by the Ministry to “ensure that the island of La Graciosa is 100% sustainable.”

The meeting with the Ecological Transition team was also attended by the Minister of Energy, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, the Minister of the Environment, Samuel Martín, and the Minister of the Lanzarote Water Consortium, Domingo Cejas. 

On behalf of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Julieta Schallenberg, Deputy Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Energy, was present; Alberto Hernández Suárez, General Director of Energy; Ángel Montañés; the General Director of Ecological Transition, and Fight against Climate Change; and Miguel Ángel Morcuende, General Director of Natural Spaces and Biodiversity.
