The UGT Union in Lanzarote will celebrate the XII Edition of the Miguel Barrios Miralles Awards for Union Work in commemoration of International Workers' Day. This event, which highlights the achievements and efforts of workers on the island, will take place this year at the Ajei house in San Bartolomé. It will be on May 1, 2026, at 11:30 AM.
During the ceremony, the dedication and commitment of those who have significantly contributed to the trade union movement in UGT Lanzarote will be recognized. On this occasion, the awardees are:
1. Collective Award to the UGT delegates on the Ground Force works council: Sara Sánchez Ahien, Segundo Reyes Cabrera and Aythamy Hernández Suárez.
2. Collective Award to the UGT delegates on the Avia Parnert works council: Domingo García González, Janson Cano Guzman, Gloria Betancort Rijo and Carmen Ramos Elvira.
3. Individual Award to David Duarte Tavío, president of the Lanzarote Island Council Works Council
UGT reaffirms its commitment to "democratic and class-based unionism, focused on defending labor rights against those who seek to erect trenches and divide society. A greater redistribution of wealth is necessary to improve wages and reduce working hours, thus guaranteeing fair and dignified development for the entire working class of our country".
"It is time to strengthen public services as a guarantee of equality, integrating a just ecological transition that improves competitiveness and the quality of employment in the new productive model," they point out.
"It is fundamental to consolidate the progress made and deepen the pending reforms: the reform of dismissals according to the European Social Charter and the end of fraud in part-time hiring. Housing is the great pending issue and a social emergency; we demand brave policies, a sufficient public housing stock, and effective mechanisms that guarantee affordable access for all citizens," they point out.
This May 1st, unionism bets on strengthening democracy: for equality and diversity, for decent wages.
