The agreement between the PSOE and the Frente Amplio to run together for the Senate does not include Lanzarote

Both political formations will run separately on the island, after reaching a historic agreement in most of the country pursuing a progressive majority in the upper house

The PSOE and the Frente Amplio, the latter made up of Izquierda Unida, Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid, Compromís, Chunta Aragonesista, and Batzarre, registered a joint coalition for the Senate at the end of last week. This agreement, which seeks to give the left greater representation in the upper house of the Cortes Generales, will not include Lanzarote and six other Canary Islands, with the exception of La Gomera, where both parties will indeed run together.

In the case of Lanzarote, both parties will run separately. The island's PSOE has already announced that its candidate for the Senate will be Manuel Fajardo Palarea.

This unprecedented coalition formed by left-wing parties aims to prevent the bloc formed by the Partido Popular and Vox from reaching the 3/5 majority in the upper house and, with it, the far-right party could achieve reforming the Spanish Constitution in different articles, as Abascal's party has warned on several occasions.

In the last general elections, held on July 23, 2023, the party led by Alberto Nuñez Feijóo achieved a majority in the Senate, while Sumar and Vox were left without representation.

In the current legislature, although the Government of Spain, formed by the PSOE and Sumar, could pass laws in Congress with the support of third parties, its revalidation in the Senate always depended on the Partido Popular's majority, which is why many laws did not move forward.

Although this agreement between Frente Amplio and the PSOE for the Senate has not reached Lanzarote, the Canary Islands have been one of the two autonomous communities where the Frente Amplio and Podemos agreed on a single list to the left of the PSOE, for both the Congress and the Senate.
