The Insular Water Council of Lanzarote has put out to tender two new actions key to the improvement of drainage and hydraulic safety on the island, with a global investment close to 1.4 million euros, within the framework of the package of works recently approved by the General Board of the body.

These interventions, published this Wednesday on the Public Sector Contracting Platform, are part of the island planning to reduce flood risks, improve riverbed behavior, and reinforce the stormwater network at different points in the territory.

The president of the Cabildo and the Insular Water Council, Oswaldo Betancort, has highlighted that “they are absolutely necessary actions that will allow us to improve the rainwater network on the island and reduce flooding problems in sensitive areas”. Betancor also highlighted “the great work of the technicians to launch all the projects in record time. Now they are on the starting grid for their award and in a short period of time we will be able to see the result of these works, which represent a qualitative leap in flood prevention”.

Specifically, one of the tenders corresponds to the works to improve rainwater drainage in Argana Alta, in Arrecife, with a budget of 964,892.11 euros and an execution period of eight months.

This action will allow to correct critical points of water accumulation through the installation of new drains, the improvement of collectors and the adaptation of the existing network, as set out in the project approved by the Council.

The second action focuses on the cleaning and adaptation of several sections of ravines in the municipality of Haría, with an investment of 461,779.02 euros and an execution period of four months. The work will be carried out in the ravines of Trujillo, Tenesía, Elvira Sánchez, Curbelo-Chafariz, and La Negra, all located in the municipality of Haría, and will include the removal of debris, vegetation cleaning, and improvement of the natural watercourse to favor runoff.

Both interventions are part of the set of investments exceeding 6.4 million euros approved on March 20 by the Insular Water Council to act on networks, drainage, and riverbeds throughout the island, with the aim of minimizing the effects of intense rains and improving water evacuation.

For their part, the Water Councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, stressed that “these works are the result of the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Insular Water Council, the Consortium and the Cabildo. Which allows us to act quickly in the prevention of floods like those experienced a year ago both in Arrecife and in other municipalities on the island”.

Interested companies may submit their bids until next June 1, in both simplified open tender procedures, which will allow for faster awarding and commencement of works.
