The Teguise City Council has begun the procedures to recognize the career of the wrestler José Luis Aparicio Morales. This action has been promoted by the Boards of Directors of the Tao-Cícar Wrestling Club and by the El Fomento de Tao Society, on the occasion of the San Miguel 2024 Festivities.
Mayor Olivia Duque highlights the professional career of José Luis Aparicio Morales, whom she defines as “a fundamental pillar of Canarian wrestling in Lanzarote”. “His dedication and passion for this sport have left an indelible mark on our community”, she considers.
“This action is not only a recognition of his figure, but also a way to perpetuate his memory and his impact on future generations”, details the first mayor. In addition, she highlights the council's commitment to Canarian wrestling.
For her part, the Councilor for Heritage, Archives and Libraries, Mar Boronat, assures that the Teguise City Council is committed to the preservation and promotion of traditions. “This tribute to José Luis Aparicio Morales is a further step in that direction, recognizing those who have significantly contributed to our identity”, she clarifies.
The City Council's Honors and Distinctions Commission will be the body that decides the terms of recognition. It will have to choose between two initiatives: placing a plaque in his honor on Ahemon street, in Tao, or naming the children's park located in front of the Canarian Wrestling Arena in the same town with his name.
Trajectory of José Luis Morales
José Luis Aparicio Morales was one of the great references of Canarian wrestling in Lanzarote and dedicated his life to this sport, especially in the Tao Wrestling Club, of which he was also president. He was also the secretary of the El Fomento de Tao Society.
Despite practicing this traditional Canarian sport, he also dedicated a large part of his life to administrative tasks and its management within the Regional Federation, the Lanzarote Island Federation and the Tao Wrestling Club. He even entered the world of writing with his book about the latter sports club, for its 75th anniversary.
