The Teguise City Council will hold this Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m., the recognition event for the Rural Woman of Teguise and La Graciosa 2026, an event dedicated to highlighting the careers of three women who have dedicated a good part of their lives to work in the rural environment and whose labor is part of the history and identity of the municipality.

In this edition, the protagonists will be Juana María Acosta Falero, known as Marusa, from Guatiza, linked to the cochineal work; Encarna García Arbelo, from Soo, known for her dedication to traditional commerce through the village shop; and Tomasa Morales Brito, from La Graciosa, whose career is linked to livestock farming.

Three women who represent different trades and ways of life linked to the rural environment of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and whose experiences reflect the effort, dedication, and importance of women's work in activities that have marked the lives of their villages for generations.

The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, highlighted that "this recognition allows us to know and value the stories of women who have dedicated their lives to work and their families, such as Juana María, Encarna, and Tomasa, three examples of effort and dedication who represent so many women in our villages whose role has been fundamental in preserving our traditions and passing them on to the next generations".

For her part, the councilor for the Women's Area, Nereyda González, pointed out that "for many years the work of rural women has been essential for the life of our villages, although it has not always received the recognition it deserves, which is why it is important to listen to their stories, learn about their experiences, and give visibility to a contribution that is part of our collective memory".

The councilor for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Myriam Jorge, emphasized that "talking about cochineal, livestock farming, or the small shops in our villages is also talking about the women who have dedicated their lives to these trades, maintaining knowledge and customs that are part of our identity and that deserve to remain present in the memory of new generations".

The event will also feature the representation of the musical show "Tingafa, mujeres del volcán", a Lanzarotean creation in which female voices will be the protagonists of a journey through Canarian music and traditions, paying homage to the role of women in the history and culture of the islands.

The event will take place in the tent set up in La Villa de Teguise for the San Rafael festivities and will be attended by the three honorees, their families, and the municipality's residents.

This tribute is part of the International Day of Rural Women, celebrated every October 15th to recognize the contribution of women to the development of rural communities and their role in preserving the crafts, traditions, and ways of life that are part of our villages' heritage.
