The Teguise City Council begins a new edition of the Luis Ramírez Scholarships, aimed at supporting young people in the municipality who have to travel outside of Lanzarote to continue their studies through the payment of the Religious Congregation of the Salesian Fathers.
The call, which is being revived after more than eight years, includes three grants of 500 euros per academic year, one of them specifically reserved for a student from La Graciosa, reinforcing the commitment to equal opportunities for all young people. Its objective is to contribute to covering part of the expenses derived from training and to ensure that economic circumstances do not become an impediment to accessing or continuing studies.
The Luis Ramírez Scholarships originate from the testamentary provisions of Don Luis Ramírez, a native of Lanzarote and a renowned philanthropist who passed away in 1950. He established that, once the obligations and legacies contemplated in his will were met, the remainder of his assets would be allocated to the Religious Congregation of the Salesian Fathers for the creation of perpetual study grants for students from needy families in Lanzarote.
In compliance with this will, ten scholarships were established, distributed among the different municipalities of the island: two for Arrecife, three for Teguise (one of them for La Graciosa), and one for Haría, San Bartolomé, Tías, Yaiza, and Tinajo.
The Councilor for Education, Mar Boronat, explains that "it is a priority to facilitate young people's access to the studies they desire, even if they have to leave the island to do so." In this regard, she emphasizes that "education is a fundamental tool for opening opportunities and building the future of our young people, and these scholarships represent significant support for families."
For this call, the guidelines included in the documentation related to the Luis Ramírez Scholarships have been taken into account, as well as the bases approved at the time by the municipal councils of Lanzarote for the one corresponding to the 2017-2018 academic year.
Applications until November 5
The application submission period will remain open until November 5, and interested individuals can complete the procedures both in person and through the official website of the Teguise City Council, where the regulatory bases can be consulted and the corresponding registration form can be accessed.
The Municipal Board for the designation of scholarship recipients is made up of the Parish Priest, who presides over it, the mayoress or a person delegated by her, and the Justice of the Peace of Teguise, who will evaluate the applications submitted, designating by majority vote the best qualified applicants.
The mayoress, Olivia Duque, highlights that resuming these grants is part of the government group's commitment to education and equal opportunities for all young people in the municipality and recalls that they were the first City Council to offer them. "From Teguise, we want no young person to have to give up continuing their education due to the economic difficulties that studying outside of Lanzarote may entail, and these scholarships are a way of accompanying them on that path and betting on their future," she points out.
Duque underlines the importance of keeping alive the purpose for which the Luis Ramírez Scholarships were conceived. "We are continuing an initiative linked to supporting education and young talent, maintaining a legacy of solidarity that still makes sense decades later," she adds.
With this new edition of the Luis Ramírez Scholarships, the corporation "reinforces its commitment to education and to ensuring that the youth of Teguise can continue their academic training, especially in those cases where they have to travel outside of Lanzarote to access the studies they wish to pursue."
