The socialist mayors of Lanzarote have accused the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, of "turning the island into a destination for speculation with renewables by promoting Renewable Acceleration Zones (ZAR) without planning, without consensus, and without consulting the municipalities". "After more than a year of announcements, rectifications, and U-turns," they denounce that "the Cabildo intends to decide on 3,163 hectares of island territory behind the backs of the town councils, generating uncertainty among local administrations and citizens".
The socialist representatives regret that more than a year had to pass for the president of the Cabildo to announce now that he will count on the town councils, after having promoted a process that has kept the municipalities on the sidelines, with continuous changes of criteria and contradictory messages that have only contributed to generating uncertainty among local administrations, the primary sector, and citizens.
In this context, the general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has held a round of meetings in recent weeks with socialist mayors and spokespersons from the affected municipalities to learn firsthand about the concerns of each territory and to convey a common position in defense of Lanzarote.
"Municipalities cannot continue to live waiting for announcements that constantly change, nor find out about decisions that directly affect their territory through the media. Lanzarote needs rigorous, consensual planning with guarantees, not more uncertainty," stated Corujo.
Corujo recalled that the PSOE has always defended the development of renewable energies, but insisted that the energy transition must be carried out with planning, institutional participation, and full respect for the landscape, the primary sector, legal certainty, and municipal autonomy.
"Renewable energies are an opportunity for Lanzarote, but they can never become synonymous with improvisation. The decisions that will condition the future of the island must be built together with the town councils, listening to the municipalities and offering certainty to the citizens," she added.
The socialist mayors agree that the debate can no longer focus solely on the affected surface area, but on the need for stable, transparent, and consensual planning that avoids new changes of direction and guarantees the protection of the territory in the general interest.
The PSOE of Lanzarote will continue to defend a model for the implementation of renewable energies that is compatible with landscape conservation, sustainable economic development, and the real participation of municipalities in all decisions that directly affect their future.
