Social Services walls up the old El Cabrerón building in Arrecife

The City Council is carrying out a "shock plan" in the city of Arrecife, walling up the facades of houses that are in a state of abandonment, and where homeless people stay in conditions, on many occasions, subhuman. This was explained this Tuesday by Emilia Perdomo, Councilor for Social Services, on the Radio Lanzarote program, Buenos Días Lanzarote. At the same time, "we are trying to rehabilitate these people and find them a place to live," explained Perdomo, who regretted that after meeting with them, having postponed the date for the walling and having urged them to go to the offices of the council to find a solution to their problem, "none of them came within the deadline we gave them," she concludes.

Thus, Perdomo assumes that they will continue living on the street, but according to her, "these people have all their needs covered by Social Services, in relation to food, clothing and personal hygiene, through subsidies to the different NGOs that operate in Lanzarote," while ensuring that "the law does not protect us to force them to live anywhere. They are free."

Other actions

Last week, a house on Benito Pérez Galdós street and another on Tomás Duarri street were also walled up. And the next action will be, according to the councilor, to tear down several houses on Gran Canaria street because "in addition to being a source of infection, the construction is in very poor condition," she said.
