The Local Police of Tías has removed a total of 71 electric scooters in the last week that were in the public domain of different pedestrian areas, sidewalks, and promenades, mostly in Puerto del Carmen. The scooters remain stored in the municipality's vehicle depot, located on Calle Anzuelo.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, and the councilor for Mobility, Sergio García, recall that in previous years rental scooters operating in the tourist town were already removed, thus responding to citizen complaints and the numerous cases of traffic accidents caused by these Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMVs).
The municipal government group insists that the regulation of public space aims to guarantee road safety, accessibility for people, and citizen coexistence, and therefore will continue to apply the necessary measures to prevent the misuse of PMVs in the municipality.
The use of rental company electric scooters in municipalities is regulated by the mobility ordinances of each town hall. The Tías City Council commissioned a specialized consultancy to prepare this ordinance, which generally requires concessionary companies to have operating licenses, payment of fees for the use of public space, and civil liability insurance policies for third parties.
Operators must comply with the guidelines of the General Directorate of Traffic and adapt their fleets so that the vehicles do not exceed 25 km/h, are geolocated, and have locking systems to prevent improper parking on sidewalks.
