The San Bartolomé City Council values that the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has rectified its position and finally considers the construction of the Playa Honda health center on the land ceded by the Consistory.
However, it rejects the intention to start drafting a new project from scratch now, ignoring the technical and administrative work carried out in recent years to provide the town with a healthcare space in line with the population and current needs.
Officials from the Infrastructure department of the SCS of the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands and the team along with technicians from an external drafting team visited the plot made available by the Consistory for the construction of this health center this Tuesday.
A decision that is "difficult to understand for the municipal government, after both the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Ministry of Health of the regional executive previously questioned the suitability of the land and dismissed the proposal promoted from San Bartolomé," explains the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez. Pérez considers it positive that "institutional pressure and citizen mobilization have led the SCS to reconsider its stance and recognize the need to provide Playa Honda with healthcare facilities in line with its current population.
However, Mayor Isidro Pérez warns that "proposing a new project now means unnecessarily prolonging the deadlines for an infrastructure highly demanded by the citizens. The municipality has already ceded the land, has a drafted technical project, and has made the necessary urban planning modifications to make its execution possible, so all that would remain is to provide it with a financial file for its execution."
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Marlene Romero, values the fact that "the SCS rectifies and finally accepts that Playa Honda needs a health center and that the land ceded by the City Council is adequate, even when it was previously rejected by both the Ministry of Health and the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort."
In this regard, the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, emphasizes that Playa Honda has experienced significant population growth in recent years and that the current clinic no longer meets the healthcare needs of the population. The construction of a health center would allow for improved spaces, expanded services, and healthcare provision in line with the reality of the area.”
“The recent collection of signatures, with thousands of endorsements, only confirms that we are facing a neighborhood demand that Coalición Canaria has preferred to ignore for a very long time, despite it being a necessity and an urgency,” states Isidro Pérez.
The San Bartolomé City Council insists that "there are no municipal impediments to moving forward with the construction." “The plot has been ceded, the technical project has already been prepared, and the necessary urban planning actions have been completed,” recalls the Councilor for Urban Planning, Marlene Romero.
“The only thing missing is the political will to do it,” emphasize both the mayor and the San Bartolomé government team, who call on the Ministry of Health "to take advantage of the work carried out by the City Council and avoid opening a new process that could be delayed for years.”
The City Council requests that the SCS explain why it considers it necessary to draft another project, what aspects of the existing document it intends to modify, and what the planned timelines and funding are for the construction of the center.
