Román Rodríguez: "Saavedra is a key politician for the democratic history of the Canary Islands"

The president of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC), Román Rodríguez, has defined this Tuesday the historic Canarian socialist leader Jerónimo Saavedra as a "key" politician and leader to interpret the history of democracy in the Canary Islands. "In this stage, there is no one who has held more responsibilities," remarked Román Rodríguez, after learning of the politician's death.

Among the multiple institutional and organic responsibilities held by Saavedra, the president of NC-BC highlighted that he was twice president of the Government of the Canary Islands. As many times, minister with Felipe González, mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Deputy of the Common and general secretary of one of the "structuring" parties of the Archipelago.

Román Rodríguez stated that "we are talking about a convinced democrat, a free and cultured man, who leaves an important mark."

The president of NC-BC conveyed to the family, friends and socialist colleagues "our deepest condolences for this unexpected loss." A "hug to his family. May he rest in peace."
