Rafa Jiménez: “Betancort shows that CC continues to be the scourge of politics in the Canary Islands”

“We are experiencing an unprecedented water crisis and the politicians in turn have dedicated themselves, precisely, to stealing money from public water companies,” laments Jiménez.

The spokesperson for Drago Canarias in Lanzarote, Rafa Jiménez, has spoken out about the attempt by the current president of the Island Council for the Canary Coalition, Oswaldo Betancort, to stop the investigation into his party colleague, former president of the corporation and current senator, Pedro San Ginés, just four days after taking office.

On this issue, Jiménez maintains that with this behavior, "Betancort demonstrates that the Canary Coalition continues to be the scourge of politics in the Canary Islands" and adds that "this shows the systemic corruption and the level of bossism that exists within the party and in the institutions, as well as a widespread feeling of invulnerability."

On the other hand, the island spokesperson for Drago Canarias emphasizes the very difficult stage that Lanzarote is experiencing, "with excessive tourist pressure and an unprecedented water crisis" and regrets that "the politicians in turn have dedicated themselves to stealing money, precisely, from public water companies; and later to cover each other up."

"We are talking about very serious events," continues Jiménez, "since Betancort ordered the actions against San Ginés to be stopped just four days after taking office, in June 2023" and specifies that "when this occurred, Betancort had not yet been appointed president of Inalsa and the Lanzarote Island Water Consortium, although in any case, the powers related to the filing of legal actions belong to the governing bodies of both institutions, and not exclusively to their president."

In this sense, Jiménez recalls that "to this day, San Ginés is being investigated by the Supreme Court for the alleged commission of the crimes of prevarication, embezzlement, fraud against the Administration, document forgery, bribery, money laundering and belonging to a criminal organization."

This plot arises during the mandates of San Ginés at the head of the Cabildo de Lanzarote between 2009 and 2019, when a lawyer friend of his appropriated two million euros belonging to the Insular de Aguas de Lanzarote public company and the Lanzarote Water Consortium. All this with the knowledge and consent of San Ginés, who also presided over both entities.
