The PSOE of Lanzarote denounces the “political cynicism” of Coalición Canaria and the Popular Party for approving in the Cabildo Plenary a motion to promote Elisa Corujo's candidacy for Illustrious Daughter of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, while they prevented the urgent socialist initiative from being debated, which called for her reinstatement at the head of the Canary Islands Euthanasia Guarantee and Evaluation Commission.
The deputy spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, accuses both parties of using the recognition as an “image laundering operation” after her dismissal by the Government of Fernando Clavijo. “Elisa Corujo has decades of experience. CC and PP are opportunely remembering her merits now to initiate a recognition procedure for next year, just when the Clavijo Government has dismissed her. It is a mockery of the doctor and the citizens,” she states.
González questions the attempt to justify her departure due to alleged incapacity while the CC and PP motion itself praises her professional prestige, experience, and commitment to bioethics. González, during her speech, linked the dismissal to the publication of a report on the exercise of the right to euthanasia in the Canary Islands which, as she explained in the Plenary, reflected the violation of the right to a dignified death, after 70% of applicants had their requests denied.
“The Clavijo Government dismisses her after a report becomes known that highlights how this right is being exercised in the Canary Islands. And this is the treatment that CC and PP give to a geriatrician of recognized prestige: they remove her and then use an award to draw a veil over what happened,” she denounces.
For González, the actions of the governing group also convey a particularly serious message: “they are clearly telling the citizens that their Government dismisses those who speak too much and then offers them a consolation prize for their silence.”
The socialists accuse Oswaldo Betancort of using the Cabildo to cover up the decision of the Clavijo Government and prioritizing obedience to his party over the respect that Elisa Corujo deserves. “Betancort once again bows his head to his leaders in Tenerife. He should demand that Clavijo reinstate Elisa Corujo and that his Government guarantee the right to euthanasia in the Canary Islands. He has to face up to a decision that he now intends to cover up with an award,” states the deputy spokesperson.
The PSOE underlines that Elisa Corujo's merits are accredited by decades of dedication to healthcare and the care of the elderly. For this reason, it rejects that her career be used to cover up a political decision and evade the debate about her reinstatement.
“They are contributing to discrediting Elisa Corujo by supporting her dismissal and attempting to resolve it with a tribute. Her career deserves respect. If they recognize her capacity, her experience, and her worth, they should start by demanding that she return to her post,” concludes González.
