The PSOE will hold primaries to elect its municipal and regional leaders between July and September and for the first time the federations will have "three voluntary windows" so that they can choose the moment that best suits them.
As socialist sources have reported, the PSOE's Organization Secretary, Rebeca Torró, presented this Wednesday to the party's territorial federations the calendar of primaries to elect the heads of lists for the municipal and regional elections of May 2027.
Torró met with the Organization Secretaries of the territorial federations and with this the PSOE "enters electoral mode and activates the entire machinery" to face the 2027 election cycle, they point out from Ferraz.
This calendar affects federations in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, island councils, general councils of Euskadi and autonomous communities and will be presented at the Federal Committee on June 27 for approval.
For the first time, the process will consist of "three voluntary windows" and each federation will be able to use the period it wishes.
The first window will open on June 29 and the federations that opt for this first period must communicate it between that day and July 1. From July 2 to 3, candidacies will be submitted; from July 4 to 1, endorsements will be collected; from July 12 to 18, the information campaign; and on July 19, the first round of voting will be held. In case a second round is necessary, it would be held on July 26.
The specific deadlines for the other periods will be approved later by the Federal Executive Committee.
According to the PSOE, this calendar responds to the request that the territories have been making to the PSOE's Organization Secretariat for the deadlines to be "flexible", so that each federation can adapt to its needs.
Territories governed by the PSOE
In municipalities where the PSOE holds the mayor's office, the party has specified, primaries will only be held if more than 50% of the militants request it and they must have the authorization of the Federal Commission of Lists.
In the case of autonomous communities presided over by socialists, it will be necessary to have the signatures of more than 40% of the membership or have an agreement from the corresponding Committee. For these cases, the Federal Executive Committee will establish a deadline for submitting requests for primaries.
With this calendar, they point out from Ferraz, the PSOE "enters fully into electoral mode and puts all the machinery in motion to face the 2027 elections".
They also highlight that for this, the Federal Committee of next June 27, which will be "the starting gun" for the next electoral cycle, "takes on special relevance".
A cycle that, the PSOE considers, will lead them "to govern in many more municipalities and autonomous communities and to revalidate the Government of Spain".
