The Coordination Council of Podemos Canarias has provisionally suspended Meri Pita, its general secretary from 2015 to 2017, from membership and has urged her to leave her seat as a deputy in Congress after learning this Thursday through the media of her decision to move to the Mixed Group.

This has been confirmed to Efe by the general coordinator of Podemos Canarias, Laura Fuentes, who has stated that she is not "surprised" by Pita's decision, as she had not been working in a coordinated manner with the organization in the archipelago for some time and had not been contributing the donation that corresponds to her in accordance with the party's code of ethics, which is mandatory.

The leader of Podemos Canarias has provided the statement sent by the Secretary of Organization of her formation, César Merino, in which this unanimous decision is reported.

Meri Pita does not want to assess this decision of the party for the moment and plans to offer a press conference next Monday, sources close to the deputy have told Efe.

The note from the Secretary of Organization emphasizes that the bodies of Podemos Canarias were unaware of Meri Pita's intention to move to the mixed group with Ana Oramas (CC) and Pedro Quevedo (NC) and that there had been no communication of any kind from the 11 positions of the purple formation in the Canary Islands who "claim to support her and follow in her footsteps."

These 11 positions were warned of expulsion for failing to comply with the code of ethics regarding salary limitation and financial contributions to the formation, the statement indicates.

Merino points out that they did know that a new party had been registered a few weeks ago in the name of officials who sympathize with the deputy, so he points out that "the movement seems to be to defect to a new project that is in no way the same as the one for which she obtained her seat in 2019."

Podemos Canarias has also expressed that it shares the position of the Confederal Group, in that the deputy for Las Palmas should "return the seat to the Canarians who trusted Unidas Podemos instead of behaving like a defector."

The Secretary of Organization reminds Pita that she received the seat of "140,000 votes from Canarians and that she was not even the head of the list" (Victoria Rosell was at the head of the candidacy).
