Carmen Pellón, the insular director of Education in Lanzarote, responded this Thursday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to the criticisms of the federation of AMPAs on the island after assuring that the economic aid of the AMPAs was not needed in the educational centers to provide them with air conditioning.
"They had provided the center with some fans and said that it should be the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, and it's not that it should be, it is," Pellón points out. After this, the director of Education contacted the CEIP Costa Teguise and the director of the center informed her that the ten modular classrooms had air conditioning and of the other 31 classrooms, 21 of them have fans.
In addition, they are installing air conditioning in the dining room which, as she points out, will have to be finished this month, "so those fans were not necessary." Regarding this information, Pellón explained that "perhaps it had not been explained well." "It doesn't diminish the gratitude, perhaps I didn't explain myself well in my statements, but rather that this money from the AMPA can be invested in other things that help the students and families that are not the direct responsibility of the ministry," she pointed out.
The federation of AMPAs of Lanzarote expressed its indignation at what they consider "criticisms" from the representatives of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, assuring that fans are not needed in the CEIP Costa Teguise, "which is easy to assure when they are not the ones who endure the high temperatures in a center with the characteristics of the aforementioned, where many structures are metallic."
"The families of Lanzarote agree with part of this statement, the fans are unnecessary because what is really necessary is the air conditioning that these gentlemen enjoy in their offices," they continued.
Secondly, the AMPAs of all the centers assure that they feel "belittled by the statement that the AMPA should not have assumed this expense." "We challenge the minister Poli Suárez and his team to audit all the centers on the island and publish the list of investments that families have been making for years in the equipment of the 'public' centers to alleviate their deficiencies, which the Ministry of Education claims not to have money to solve," they expressed.
Budget allocated to centers for air conditioning
On the other hand, Carmen Pellón has recalled that, in case these actions had been necessary, the school center must take charge "because we have the allocation for it and, in case the center did not have money, an extraordinary budget would be requested". The budget that the ministry grants to each center for air conditioning depends on its characteristics and ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 euros.
Regarding the slowness in the air conditioning of educational centers, Pellón has assured that in the case of IES Costa Teguise, 12 air conditioners are already being installed. "It is true that perhaps in some classrooms more air conditioning is still needed, they must buy fans if not, because in high schools for the most part it may be that the electrical installations have sufficient capacity to admit it, but there are some schools in which many times the electrical installations are not prepared to assimilate this energy load," she has detailed.
In this way, she has clarified that the electrical installations and what refers to this system "is the responsibility of the town councils."
