Paulino Rivero will be the candidate of the Canarian Coalition (CC) for the Presidency of the Government in the elections scheduled for May 2011, having obtained the endorsements of 76.6 percent of the 91 members of the National Political Council. Rivero thus becomes the first leader of the Canarian nationalists to repeat his candidacy for the head of the Executive since the creation of the project in 1993.
The president of CC, Claudina Morales, announced this on Monday after the meeting of the permanent committee of the Canarian nationalists, highlighting that this formula of adhesion has been "the most inclusive", because no island committee has chosen to propose a candidate, thus overcoming possible insularisms and betting on deepening the regional approach of the nationalist project.
"This candidacy has far exceeded the 20 percent of endorsements required by the statutes and of the 91 members of the National Political Council, Paulino Rivero has presented a candidacy with 70 endorsements, with more than 76, almost 77 percent of the members," Morales said.
Morales also stressed that the Political Council will ratify Rivero's candidacy on Saturday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, since he only needs 56 votes and the current president already has 14 more than necessary.
Since CC was created in 1993, the nationalist formation has never repeated a candidate for president of the Government, as it was Manuel Hermoso in 1995, Román Rodríguez in 1999, Adán Martín four years later and Rivero in 2007.
Morales herself has acknowledged that "this was not normal", so she was pleased that CC has overcome the principles of alternation and internal insularisms that prevented the continuity of the candidates in the past, despite the fact that all of them have been presidents of the regional Executive.
