The Cabildo of Lanzarote has lamented the death of the first President of the Canary Islands and former minister Jerónimo Saavedra. In addition to being mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and minister in the Government of Spain.
The President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, conveys his deepest condolences to the family and friends of who was "one of the most influential and beloved figures in Canarian politics".
"Jerónimo has been a professional and personal example for the entire political class of the Canary Islands, a man of affable character who always gave his life for the Islands and defended his people from each of the positions in which he has found himself in his vast career," Oswaldo Betancort highlighted.
"His great vocation, as he admitted on many occasions, was teaching, and I can say that he has played that role not only with his students, but also with many of the public representatives of today. Rest in peace, Jerónimo," the president concluded.
Jerónimo Saavedra was born in 1936 and in 1993 he became the second Canarian minister of the democratic era. He passed away this Tuesday, November 21, at the age of 87, at his home in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
