The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced that Oswaldo Betancort and his Government Group have rejected the Cabildo's request to the Government of the Canary Islands to halt the processing of marine cages on the coast of Lanzarote. The Socialist Group proposed an institutional agreement for the Cabildo of Lanzarote to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to halt the processing of marine cages in Lanzarote, but Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular have rejected it during the plenary session held on Tuesday morning.
The Socialist Group's advisor in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Benjamín Perdomo, has lamented that the president "turns his back on the interests of Lanzarote and allows this authentic nonsense to continue, which leaves part of the island's coastline in the most absolute defenselessness."
Perdomo recalled that "it was Loli Corujo's government that began an intense judicial activity to prevent the project from going ahead, and we have insisted that the current government should continue along that path and not take a step back in the defense of Lanzarote's interests. Today, the President of the Cabildo has turned his back on his island."
"The project to install marine cages off our coasts continues to advance, despite being planned in areas of ecological value that also coincide with residential areas and areas of extraordinary importance for our tourist activity. The legal actions filed by the previous corporation against the regulation of the sector will still take some time to bear fruit, given the resolution times of this type of procedure, so it is vitally important that exceptional measures be adopted against the installation project presented by the company Yaizatún, which has just been submitted to the public information process," Perdomo said during his speech at the plenary session on Tuesday morning.
To conclude, Perdomo recalled that the defenselessness of the area bears the seal of Coalición Canaria: "the declaration of the area between Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen as an Aquaculture Interest Zone (ZIA) was included in the PROAC, which was approved by the Government Council of the Canary Islands, chaired by Fernando Clavijo, on July 9, 2018."
"The plan was approved at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water, headed by Narvay Quintero as Minister, with Orlando Umpiérrez from Lanzarote as the Director General of Fisheries. Despite the initial document having been submitted to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, then presided over by Pedro San Ginés, the first island institution did not make any allegations in defense of the coasts of Lanzarote," concludes the socialist councilor.
